Warnings: ? Um...sap?
Notes: I had to do this song! I heard it and just had to. The song is Cool Night by Paul Davis, lyrics can be found at the end of the fic. It's an old classic ^_^ It's not really a song fic so much as a fic based very loosely around the song. You'll see.

Trunks looked out of his window and sighed as he saw that the early chill had killed his flowers. It was such a shame they added color when he looked outside at the barren lot his house sat on. Summer was gone. It was officially autumn now. Not a bad season of course, but he missed the warmth and sunny days of summer.

Turning away from the window Trunks went back to preparing the chickens he'd bought at the market. Goten was going to come over for his little house warming party. Trunks just couldn't stand to live at home any more. There were too many expectations there. His father expected him to be a great fighter while his mother expected him to be the next president of Capsule Corps. Neither of which he had a very strong desire to do.

Sure he had the inherent urge and desire to fight and improve his skills, but he didn't want to do it for the rest of his life. He saw what it was like for his father to be alienated from everyone by his own royal pride. He also saw what it was like for his mother, locked away in her own thoughts and duties. He just had no desire to do it. Sure he was smart. Smart enough to know what he wanted and it was none of the above.

So after lots of fighting, screaming, begging, pleading, even tears on his mother's part, his parents had finally given him a small capsule house of his own and a barren piece of land on the edge of town to put it on. It wasn't a bad house it just wasn't the greatest. For all their money they gave him a simple economy home. In a way he understood, they wanted him to not be spoiled. If he wanted better he had to work for it. If he wasn't going to follow their plans they weren't exactly going to make it easy for him.

Trunks looked up as somebody knocked on the door. It had to be Goten. He'd only moved in a few weeks ago, at the end of summer and he hadn't had any visitors yet. Goten was the first person that he had invited over. It wasn't that he was trying to keep people away. He was just trying to organize so that when he finally invited somebody over the house was in order rather then looking like a bachelor's pigsty.

Checking the oven timer one last time, Trunks rushed to open the door. It wouldn't be very good if he left Goten out on the doorstep and he caught a cold from the chill air. Trunks smiled as he opened the door to reveal Goten jumping from foot to foot as he tried to stay warm.

"Can I help you?" Trunks asked mock politely.

"Yes. Yes you can. You can move your skinny butt out of the way and let me in! I'm freezing!" Goten said pushing inside.

"Aww. Do I really have a skinny butt?" Trunks asked looking over his shoulder at the part in question as he shut the door.

Goten rolled his eyes he took off his heavy coat and threw it at Trunks. He was wearing a thick sweater and Trunks once again wondered how Goten could still be cold with all the layers he usually wore. Goten continued his way into the house looking around with interest. As soon as he saw the large fireplace in the living room he made a beeline for it. He stood as close to the fire as he could without getting singed. He idly rubbed his hands together as he looked over the pictures on the mantle.

There were a few photos of family and friends but it was mostly pictures of himself and Goten. Goten picked up the one that was Trunks' personal favorite. It had been taken when they were small during one of their frequent sleepovers. Goten was snuggled up against him sucking on Trunks thumb while Trunks cradled the smaller boy in his arms. At the time the picture had been blackmail material. Looking back it was just another sweet moment in their history.

"So?" Trunks asked breaking the silence.

"So what?" Goten asked putting the picture back in its proper place.

"So what do you think of my house?" Trunks asked spreading his arms while and gesturing around.

"I don't know. I haven't gotten the grand tour yet." Goten shrugged even as a teasing smile formed on his lips.

"Oh alright. Here's the budget tour." Trunks said leading Goten down a short hallway.

"Why only the budget tour?" Goten asked as he followed Trunks into the first room.

"No reason," Trunks responded airily even as visions of showing Goten how to break in the bed danced through his mind.

Goten had no chance to respond as Trunks launched into a short description of the room, pointing out a few things here and there. Goten nodded now and again as he was lead through each room. A library, a bathroom, a small guest bedroom, a linen closet and the master bedroom. The bedroom was the nicest of all.

Trunks had obviously spent more time and money on this room then the rest of the house. There was a large king size canopy bed in the center of the room. It had a small step stool to climb into it and red velvet curtains that could be draped down for privacy. A large dresser and wardrobe lined the walls along with a big cushy armchair and a few throw pillows that faced the TV on the dresser. Goten had wondered at the absence of a television in the living room. Guess that solved the mystery.

Goten was too busy looking around the room to notice Trunks leave at the sound of a distant buzzing. After a few minutes he realized that he had been left alone. Grinning to himself Goten walked up to the bed and climbed in it. He always enjoyed seeing what kind of beds other people slept in. This was a really nice one. As he lay back in it and looked up at the canopy he decided that this was the kind of bed he wanted when he moved out on his own.

"Dinner!" Trunks called from somewhere else in the house.

Goten groaned as he crawled to the edge of the bed. It was really comfortable and he was sure that he could stay there forever. But he was sure that Trunks would have a few things to say about that. So he hopped down the little steps and wandered back out into the house.

"Where are you?" Goten called out, still unfamiliar with the house.

"In the kitchen, just follow your nose," Trunks replied.

Sticking his tongue out at nobody in particular Goten walked in the direction that Trunks' voice came from. He eventually walked into the kitchen and dining room area as Trunks put the food out on the table.

"I hope you're hungry," Trunks said looking up from lighting a candle.

"Always," Goten replied licking his lips.

"Well then by all means, sit, eat," Trunks smiled gesturing to a chair.

And Goten did just that.

Dinner was nice, the food was good and they talked just like old times. Goten hadn't gotten to see Trunks much during the move and he missed the time they spent together. He helped Trunks load their dirty dishes into the dishwasher. There weren't any leftovers to put away so they just went to the living room to sit around and talk some more.

Trunks sat down on the couch facing the fire. Goten stopped and looked between Trunks and the fireplace. A shiver ran through him. He was still chilly. The house didn't have a very good heating system. As much as he wanted to sit with his friend, he wanted to get warm more. So Goten sat on the rug directly in front of the hearth and put his hands out, desperate for the warmth of the fire.

"I'm sorry, I didn't know you were cold," Trunks said.

"It's not your fault," Goten said, turning and giving him a reassuring smile.

Trunks frowned at the pale blue tinge of his friend's lips. He honestly didn't think it was that cold. But then Goten always was more sensitive to temperature. In the summer he got hotter faster and burned worse then everyone else. It wasn't uncommon for Goten to catch sunstroke at least twice over the summer months, sometimes more. In the winter he was always the first to bundle up in layers of winter clothes. Trunks had gotten used to the cooler temperatures of his house but it was obviously too cold for Goten.

Trunks picked up the fleece blanket on the arm of the couch and walked over to Goten. Goten jumped as Trunks sat behind him. Goten suddenly found himself pulled back into Trunks' lap. Two arms wrapped around him bringing a soft fleece blanket to wrap around his shoulders and pull him securely against Trunks' chest. After his initial surprise Goten snuggled down into the warmth that Trunks had provided for him.

"Is this okay?" Trunks asked a bit unsure. "Because if you're uncomfortable I can move."

Goten giggled softly as Trunks' breath tickled his ear. "No, I like it this way. It's nice," Goten sighed as he rested his head back on Trunks' shoulder.

Trunks didn't reply. He just tilted his head and rested his cheek on Goten's soft spiky hair. Inhaling, Trunks could smell the scent of summer in Goten's hair, summer and fun and all the things that were Goten. One simple breath told him everything he needed to know and it was wonderful, comforting and reassuring just to have his best friend here with him. Unthinkingly he kissed the crown of Goten's head.

Goten made a soft sigh of contentment and turned his face forward Trunks, sleepy half lidded eyes blinking at him curiously. Smiling Trunks leaned forward slightly and kissed the end of Goten's nose. Goten's eyes crossed briefly before he looked up at Trunks. For a moment he was afraid that Goten was about to kill him. Then Goten leaned up and pressed his lips against Trunks'.

The kiss was whisper soft and barely there but it said so much. If a picture was worth a thousand words then surely their kiss was screaming millions at the tops of its lungs. Goten allowed himself to fall gently away from the kiss. His head settling back on Trunks' shoulder. Trunks looked down at Goten with awe. Goten simply squirmed around in Trunks' arms till he had his whole body curled up against Trunks and his head resting against Trunks' neck. Trunks was afraid to break the silence with words so he simply held Goten, keeping him warm until he fell asleep.

Trunks hugged his sleeping friend closer. This simple embrace was far more than he dared dream. He had always loved his best friend and he knew that Goten loved him in return he just wasn't sure of the nature of Goten's love. This was just a minor victory and Trunks refused to leap ahead and overstep himself. He wouldn't try to look ahead. He'd just live in the moment and the moment consisted of snuggling with Goten in front of the fire, which he was more than happy to do.

The End

~Cool Night Lyrics~
Paul Davis

I sometimes wonder why
All the flowers had to die
I dream about you
And now-Summer's come and gone
And the nights they seem so long
Come on over tonight
Come on over

Chorus:
It's gonna be a cool night
Just let me hold you by the firelight
If it don't feel right you can go

Oh -- when the cool night
Brings back memories of the good life
When this love was not so old

Oh - I won't talk about the past
How love's supposed to last
Forever
And you -
Don't have to take a stand
Lay out any plans
Come on over tonight
Come on over

Aww how fluffy ^_^
